The charity ‘Mummy’s Star’ was established in 2013 in order to support women experiencing a cancer diagnosis during pregnancy or within a year of birth. Having worked closely with over 200 women, the charity has learned a great deal regarding their specific needs and the complexity of their situations.

This presentation will introduce Mummy’s Star charity, and give a brief explanation of the background and work involved, thus providing a context for the statistics and key lessons learned. The issues affecting women in this situation will be explored through the use of case studies. Ideas will be discussed regarding the improvement of the experience of pregnant women with cancer, not only by midwives and other healthcare practitioners, but also by the wider system of maternity care. Subjects such as continuity of carer, effective signposting, donor breast milk, mental health, care pathways and increasing normality are particularly relevant here and will be discussed with reference to women’s experiences.

This is a free event however donations on the day for the charity would be greatly appreciated.
